  • Discolored patches in your mouth or throat.
  • Lip or mouth sores that bleed easily or don’t heal within two weeks.
  • Rough or crusty areas near your oral cavity.
  • Oral bleeding that seems to have no cause.
  • Unexplained numbness, pain, or tenderness around your mouth, throat, or face.
  • Difficulty or discomfort while chewing, swallowing, or moving your tongue or jaw.
  • Vocal changes

What Does a Dentist Look for During an Oral Cancer Screening?

In addition to the potential symptoms outlined above, Dr. Arditti will also closely examine your health history for certain risk factors. Your smoking and drinking habits, as well as how frequently you get sunburnt, are also important considerations. This and her extensive education will help her determine whether an abnormal lump should be investigated or monitored, or is simply a canker sore that will heal on its own.

What Can I Expect During My Screening?

Oral cancer screenings in Fort Worth are so noninvasive and quick that you might not even notice them. Dr. Arditti will start by visually examining your lips, gums, throat, tongue, and the area underneath your tongue. You might feel her gently touching certain spots to check for rough patches. Finally, Dr. Arditti will palpate your neck and jaw, taking note of any suspicious lumps, bumps, or tenderness. One of our other team members will also repeat the process so they and Dr. Arditti can compare their findings.

If Dr. Arditti does tell you to come back in a few weeks for another screening or refers you to a specialist, don’t panic. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you do have oral cancer – just that there’s an abnormality worth investigating further. Please don’t hesitate to voice any questions or concerns you may have at any point during your screening!
