Easy Home Remedies for Severe Toothaches

A severe toothache can come on suddenly and stop you in your tracks. Whether it’s caused by a cavity, an infection, a cracked tooth, or gum irritation, the pain can be intense and disruptive. While seeing a dentist is the only way to address the root cause, there are several easy home remedies you can try to temporarily relieve discomfort until you get professional care. Here are some tried-and-true methods you can use to manage a severe toothache at home.

Saltwater Rinse

One of the simplest and most effective remedies is a saltwater rinse. Saltwater acts as a natural disinfectant and helps reduce inflammation.

How to use it:

  • Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water.
  • Swish the solution around in your mouth for 30 seconds.
  • Spit it out and repeat several times a day.

This rinse can help loosen debris, reduce swelling, and relieve irritation around the affected tooth.

Cold Compress

If your face is swollen or the pain is sharp, a cold compress can numb the area and reduce inflammation.

How to use it:

  • Wrap a bag of ice or frozen peas in a cloth.
  • Apply to the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
  • Repeat every few hours as needed.

Cold therapy is especially helpful for toothaches caused by trauma or swelling.

Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can reduce inflammation and block pain signals. Always follow the dosage instructions on the label and avoid putting aspirin directly on the gum – it can cause burns or irritation.

If you have swelling, ibuprofen may be the better choice as it also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Clove Oil

Clove oil has been used for centuries to treat tooth pain. It contains eugenol, a natural anesthetic and antibacterial agent.

How to use it:

  • Soak a cotton ball in a few drops of clove oil.
  • Place the cotton on the painful area for a few minutes.
  • Alternatively, mix clove oil with a few drops of carrier oil (like olive oil) and apply with a cotton swab.

Clove oil can offer fast relief, but avoid using it in large quantities.

Garlic Paste

Garlic has natural antibacterial properties and can help kill harmful bacteria that cause tooth pain.

How to use it:

  • Crush a fresh garlic clove into a paste.
  • Apply it to the affected tooth for a few minutes.
  • Rinse your mouth thoroughly afterward.

While the taste is strong, the pain relief may be worth it.

Peppermint Tea Bag

A cooled peppermint tea bag can act as a mild numbing agent and soothe irritated gums.

How to use it:

  • Steep a tea bag, then let it cool in the refrigerator.
  • Place it on the sore area for 10 to 15 minutes.

When to See a Dentist

While these remedies can offer temporary relief, they won’t cure infections, deep cavities, or fractured teeth. If your toothache lasts more than a day or two, or if you experience fever, swelling, or pus, see a dentist immediately. These could be signs of a serious infection that requires professional treatment.

Severe toothaches are painful, but with these easy home remedies, you can find some relief until your dental appointment. Salt rinses, cold compresses, and natural options like clove oil or garlic can all help soothe your pain. Just remember: these solutions are temporary; seeing a dentist is the key to lasting relief.
